16_wip-Dominique Hurley-DLH_1481I jumped out of bed on Saturday, grateful to have a least a few hours of painting in before the other scheduled work in my planner.  With 2 days left before the start of B-School, I had many goals for the weekend.  So I put the timer on for 3.5 hours and asked for intuitive guidance about where to take this painting next.

17_wip-Dominique Hurley-DLH_1482As you can see above, the mediums I had used had dried overnight – the granular gel and glass beads on the right are almost clear (see previous post for details).

What I was envisioning was the feel of the yin yang symbol – that balance of opposite forces – of masculine and feminine.

The new contrast between the pearl and dark blue faces has made it clearer that these are two faces side-by-side.  In so doing, however, it’s taken away the optical illusion that it may have been one face. When I look back at the photos in the previous post, I kind of liked the white and white.  What do you think?

From there, I have been growing the circles out – stepping back after each step to contemplate where the painting wants to go. I’ve had several ideas about covering the whole painting in dark tangle patterns, or keeping it simpler by only putting four designs in the corners. I’m not planning it- I’m simply listening and seeing where it wants to go when I’m ready to paint.  This is where it’s at after 3.5 hours on Saturday and a little less on Sunday.

Looking at the photos (instead of the painting itself) really helps get a different perspective.  Another great trick is looking at the painting in the mirror. I always get good feedback that way.
