The Nature Child Drum – a Commission

There’s always a sense of curiosity and wonder as I open to the creative flow in the studio.

There’s an additional layer of delight when it comes to co-creating a commission.

First, there’s the opening up for another: “May I be a channel for whatever is in the Highest Good for my client”.

Then, there’s the deep connection with another human being and their Team of Divine Helpers without being present face to face.

Creating a commission gives me a window into who they truly are – sometimes in ways they may not even be conscious of.

So it’s wonderful to hear my clients’ stories and feedback once they receive their commissioned piece. This was no exception.

Lisa’s Nature Child Drum

Having already purchased 2 of my small paintings at a spiritual retreat, Lisa expressed complete trust in my co-creative process with Spirit.

She gave me no instructions or preferences. This is the most fun for me – a totally blank canvas …. or drum in this case.

My visions for it started a few days before I had time to start.

These are like mini-movies, so what I paint is the essence of what I experience through all my senses during those visions.

What I saw / felt / heard was a woman at one with the Elements. Although standing still, she was also dancing with the sun and rain – open to the constant changes.

She was at Home in all weather – part of the Elemental Flow in both her inner and outer environment.

One of the messages of the Nature Child Drum is a call to honour or re-awaken that curiosity and wonder that give children that sense of adventure as they embark on their days.

This is the spark that ignites passion for life itself – a great message for us all.

In Lisa’s Words

Here’s what Lisa wrote after seeing her Nature Child Drum for the first time:

I still haven’t been able to string together the words to describe the energy your imagery invokes in me! It’s amazing!

Thank you for agreeing to channel this beautifully decorated drum for me. It’s perfect in many ways – colour, elements, sparkle, duality, a stance of accomplishment. This is a stance I’ve often visualized myself in over the past 5 years – standing on a high place facing northwest or sometimes southeast, arms held to the sky, grateful to have opportunities and open to new opportunities.

To me, the image portrays a balance of energy, an alignment of self with external surroundings based on on a synthesis of past experiences (water-light interaction) – allowing an opportunity for conscious and unconscious growth by balancing and channeling the energies of both our wild and natural child.

Our eyes can synthesize rain storms into beautiful rainbows with the help of a bright light….

This creative process has provided me with many insights and revelations. I appreciate your ever present guidance. You have opened many doors for me along this path.

Drum Commissions

I currently have 2 drums left in my online shop. These are $999 + tax.

1- The Mother Drum – see it here

2- The Ocean Labyrinth drum – see it here

Drum Commissions are $1,111 for a 16″ Remo vegan buffalo drum.

I am currently taking orders (click here) for after Christmas as I’ll need to order your blank drums beforehand and will be off-island mid-December to mid-January.

“The Remo Standard Buffalo Drum is inspired by the indigenous cultures of the Americas. Equipped with a rope handle and a single mallet. The Remo Standard Buffalo Drum is manufactured with Remo’s Fiberskyn® drumheads and patented Acousticon® drum shells for enhanced durability in any environment. Producing the same tonal characteristics found on traditional wood shell drums, the standard Buffalo Drums feature excellent projection and enhanced low-pitched fundamentals.”

According to Dr. Christiane Northrup, drumming does a lot more than provide a way to access a Higher Power. 9 other health benefits she mentions are:

  • Makes you happy
  • Induces deep relaxation.
  • Helps control chronic pain.
  • Boosts your immune system.
  • Creates a sense of connectedness.
  • Aligns your body and mind with the natural world.
  • Releases negative feelings.
  • Puts you in the present moment.
  • Allows for personal transformation.

Reach out if you’re ready to commission me to co-create a drum specifically designed for you.

Joined – a painting on auction

Do you recognize this painting?

It inspired the”Co-Creating from a United Light” guided meditation and blog post I sent out September 24th.

With IceberGallery’s week of events & online auction starting this Sunday, it’s time to tell you more about it all.

IceberGallery is an artist-run non profit organization focused on providing entrepreneurial, educational, and collaborative opportunities to visual artists within Newfoundland & Labrador.

I enjoy supporting this organization. Not only have I benefitted from some of their offerings in recent years, but I would have loved to be a part of such a group decades ago, when I was starting to sell my work.

So when their call went out to create an 11″ x 14″ painting based on the theme of Convergence for their fundraiser auction, I said “Yes!”.

Proceeds from the online auction will be split between the artist (60%) and IceberGallery (40%). All funds raised for the organization will go towards IceberGallery’s many free programming initiatives. If you’d like to join IceberGallery for free, sign-up here.

Make sure to also sign-up to their Facebook Page or Instagram for updates and registration links to all their events next week. I’ll also be including a link to the November 10th-December 1st auction in my next newsletter, so make sure you’re signed-up.

Participate in the Auction- Register Now

The Auction starts November 10th and ends December 1st.

To participate, register here and keep on bidding.

You could win my painting “Joined” or many other pieces from IceberGallery artists from around the province.

Joined – my painting on auction

When I read that the theme of the auction was Convergence, I was inspired to create yet another painting featuring the Vesica Piscis, my favourite sacred geometry shape.

Convergence is when two or more things come together to form a new whole.

In the Vesica Pisces , the joining of two overlapping circles with the same radius creates a central sacred space.

This shape has been used since ancient times in various cultures and spiritual traditions. It’s the basis for the Flower of Life, the fish symbol of Jesus Christ, the yoni, etc.

In sacred geometry, the Vesica Piscis is viewed as a powerful representation of creation and the union of opposites. It is believed to symbolize the intersection of the spiritual and material realms, embodying the birth of the universe from the void. This shape is also seen as a gateway of creation, indicative of divine proportion and balance. The Vesica Piscis encapsulates themes of duality and harmony, making it a profound symbol for the interconnectedness and the continuous cycle of life and existence. (source)

As is usual in the intuitive painting process, the imagery evolved layer by layer.

Messages of “As Above So Below” appeared with the inclusion of the mirroring lotus flowers.

These flower have their roots far below the water surface in the mud. Their waxy petals are cleaned by the push towards the light.

As I painted, I reflected on how our intention and efforts to create from this joined place was indeed a push towards living in the Light.

I also felt like the joining of the spirit and physical realms could not be contained within the borders of the circles. The power is rooted beyond time and space, just as the lotus is rooted far below where this beauty emerges.

Including the lotus flowers also added the symbolism of purity, devotion, rebirth, spiritual awakening to the mix.

And at the centre of it all – the tree of life painted on blue glass with both its branches and roots rich with fruit.

There are so many other layers of symbolism and energy in this glass-bead covered piece. The beads themselves, applied over iridescent paint, plays with the light in amazing ways. This is an extra reminder of the magic of living from this sacred joined place of the spiritual and physical realms.

Want to win it? Register for the auction here and start bidding November 10th.

Intergalactic Peace Council – Transformative Art Workshop

Halloween has traditionally encouraged children and adults alike to stretch their imaginations, role play, and practice asking & receiving. Leaving the tricks aside, there are a lot of treats in this seasonal skill set.

These are the same treats I hope to bring into more schools in 2024-25 thanks to the ImmersArt micro-grant program for Canadian French Immersion junior and senior high schools.

This program fosters links between Canadian schools, cultural organizations and artists. I found out about it thanks to the Newfoundland & Labrador chapter of  Canadian Parents for French (CPF).

Last week, CPF brought me to Ascencion Collegiate in Bay Roberts, where 50 grade 11 students were the first to experience my “Intergalactic Peace Council” workshop I plan to deliver through the ImmersArt Program.

This 1-hour transformative art workshop came out of a teacher request to touch upon the theme of diversity and an appreciation for various cultures and languages.

How thrilling to help these students stretch their comfort zones to explore creative movement, visualization, visual expression, visionary word play and experiential sharing!

How fun to hear that different students preferred different parts of the activity. One young man said visualizing perfect peace on Earth was the most powerful for him. This brought a smile to my heart and a tear to my eye.

It was also the first time I got to use my new Visionary Word Cards in a group setting. (Don’t forget that if you’d like a set before Christmas, you have until November 1st to pre-order / pre-pay. Learn more here. )

Here’s a description of what we did in case you know of any French immersion high schools in Newfoundland & Labrador  (or Ottawa mid-December to mid-January) that may want to bring me in. I will travel out of St. John’s if we can get more than 1 school in a region.

Also contact me if you’d like to bring me in to lead the Intergalactic Peace Council or other transformative art program with your group (teens or adults) in French or English in your work setting, social gathering, etc.

Intergalactic Peace Council – the workshop

Intergalactic Peace Council – a transformative art experience with Dominique Hurley

The year is 2222. Earth has experienced absolute peace for 111 years. Students become ambassadors throughout the galaxies to convey the experience of peace through the universal language of movement and colour. They then provide advice on how to achieve this appreciation and respect for diversity through visionary word play and creative visual expression. In this 1-hour session, students will use visualization, imagination and personal process before debriefing in groups.

“It was a refreshing opportunity for students to express themselves creatively in French, and also invoke feelings of serenity and calm. I would describe the experience as unique and enriching.”

Susan Higdon – Grade 11 French Immersion Teacher, Ascension Collegiate, Bay Roberts

Morgan Kearly – French Department Head, Ascension Collegiate, Bay Roberts

Celebrating Creativity – J. Light’s Art Journal

We are creative beings. Yes, you too!

There are so many ways to be creative in our lives:

  • hobbies
  • social gatherings and ceremonies
  • problem solving
  • cooking
  • gardening, landscape design
  • house decorating
  • play
  • childrearing
  • dressing
  • the arts
  • intuitive living
  • the list is endless

Creativity is part of who we are!

Witnessing other people’s creativity is inspiring – a gift that keeps on giving.

How delightful to find out what inspires them, and how that inspiration is translated through their ways of being and doing.

J. Light’s story is one that touched my life directly.

Her initial contact and our conversation was a pleasant surprise. And her request inspired my own creativity.

May it continue to give to her and to all those who are touched by her idea-come-to-life.

J. Light and Her Art Journal

I received an email from J. Light in California on September 14th:

I have a handmade journal that I bought from an artist in Ireland. I have been meeting, inviting and commissioning artists to add art to her pages. Can we discuss this possibility?”

Of course I was intrigued. Following a beautiful Zoom call connection, I was on board. Her journal was on my doorstep days later.

In her own words, J. Light explains the “why” behind this project:

My art journal project began as a way to connect with my friends. I was feeling isolated, craving connection and beauty. It was a practice in inviting women to participate, as I am usually not one to make requests of others. I have asked each contributor to include a heart somewhere in the image. I love how each piece reflects the uniqueness and style of its artist. It was noteworthy, after three local contributors, how I wanted to send the journal out of state. And then, even out of the country. It is my hope to support artists, and make new friends in this process. I intend to eventually invite poets to choose an image from the journal to inspire a piece of writing.
Here’s to HeArt Around the World…the joy of creative expression and friendship.

My Contribution

The vision for my double-page spread started floating in my consciousness a few days before I started work on the project. But as many of my paintings, it evolved layer by layer as I was painting.

Adding to this personal nomadic art collection was an honour.

Enjoying the contributions of others was a part of the process.

The message that came through for J. Light is one that can benefit us all. Micheal Beckwith expresses it so well:

“Grow deep roots to harvest rich fruit! When your roots run deep, you cannot help but bear the fruit of the Spirit.”

Painting the tree of life within the sideways Vesica Piscis represents the birthing and rebirthing of limitless love and life – the roots and fruits of which expand beyond the boundaries of time and space.

When J. Light’s journal arrived back in California, she wrote:

Your contribution fills my heart and speaks to my soul. I thank you.

What other symbolism or messages can you feel come through for you in this image? Feel free to comment below.

May your days be filled with your own unique and creative ways of being and doing. And may we all continue to inspire each other.

Here’s to celebrating creativity!

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

As I recover from my first ever bout of COVID, I’m grateful it wasn’t worse than it was and that it’ll soon be over.

There’s been so much to be grateful for this past year!  I’m spending a few moments every day in the days leading up to Canadian Thanksgiving reflecting on the many aspects of my life:

  • the people
  • the places
  • the events
  • my generally good health
  • the inspired projects
  • my collectors & supporters
  • the opportunities to stretch my comfort zones
  • the potential for even greater alignment with my True Self
  • my Team of Divine Helpers
  • my passion & purpose
  • all of it.

I invite you to join me – eyes open or closed – to just breathe in life around whatever you are thankful for.

May that gratitude then flower and spread through  your eyes, your smile, your words, your actions, and your energy in the world.

May this and every day be a prayer of thanksgiving.

Blessings and thanks,

Dominique

Connecting the Dots – Contemplative Labyrinth Activism with the Ocean Health Labyrinth

From Me to We – Connecting the Dots

Have you ever gotten involved in something only later to find out that it was part of something much bigger in the world?

You may have been attracted by the surface level of something – a hobby, sport, conversation, etc.  Then, with time, your growing passion had you diving much deeper into a grander global design – a movement from “me” to “we”.

The labyrinth is turning out to be such an experience for me.

Decades ago, I walked labyrinths for the quiet contemplation – this form of moving meditation helped me connect to inner peace, joy, intuition, focused intention and prayer.

If I could be there alone, all the better!

I continued this practice alone in the studio, painting dotted labyrinths as another form of meditation and prayer, connecting me to this ancient aesthetic design that appealed to my soul.

I was connecting the dots on the surface of the canvas, ignorant of the fact that others were connecting dots physically and energetically through a global movement called Contemplative Labyrinth Activism, which I’ll explain further down.

The Legacy Labyrinth Project

This past Sunday was the dedication ceremony for the Ocean Health Labyrinth at the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in the city of St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, where I live.

It is now #9 in a global network of labyrinths in the Legacy Labyrinth Project.

The LLP’s  vision:

We believe that the labyrinth experience creates connection, compassion and coherence for individuals, communities and the planet.”

The LLP mission:

We build, connect and use labyrinths to effect change throughout the world.  We conduct research and collaborate with labyrinth walkers in practice of contemplative labyrinth activism.

Each of the 9 labyrinths in this growing network on 3 continents so far is dedicated to a different focal theme.

In addition to our theme of Ocean Health here in St. John’s, the other 8 are:

  1. La Falda, Argentina
Reconciliation for families and neighbors of the people forced to flee their homes in Europe during the Holocaust
  2. Ohio Wesleyan University – Delaware, OH – USA
    Inter-faith Peace
  3. Hoffman Institute (formerly Institute of Noetic Sciences) – Petaluma, CA – USA
    Universal Interconnectedness
  4. The Crossing – Grasslands National Park: Val Marie, SK – Canada
    Divine Feminine & Healing
  5. Hotellerie St. Yves – Chartres – France
    Wisdom
  6. Rollins College – Winter Park, FL-USA
    Becoming Responsible Global Citizens
  7. ASA Adirondack – Bakers Mills, NY-USA
    Interconnectedness of All Beings
  8. Center for Spiritual Living of Colorado Springs – Colorado Springs, CO – USA
    Great Love

Is your community the next?

During Sunday’s ceremony, all those who participated were given a small vial containing sand, grass, minerals, etc. from one of the other 8 locations. We added these to the sea water for our Ocean Health Labyrinth and the whole was later sprinkled around the cathedral – joining this location to this growing global network.

Since the 9 labyrinths have been dedicated and linked both physically and energetically, people walking one labyrinth can easily add their intentions and energy to any of the other communities and themes.

Contemplative Labyrinth Activism

I’m so glad I arrived at the cathedral half an hour early for my Artist Talk on Saturday to workshop participants from both the United States and Canada.

The presentation before mine was my first introduction to the concept of Contemplative Labyrinth Activism.

As described on the Labyrinth Activist Network site:

Labyrinth activism is walking in heart coherence, with a shared focused intention for change or healing. It is most effective when done in groups. It is often experienced as a sacred experience cultivating a sense of connectedness and insight.

This collective of labyrinth walkers are peacefully contributing to global change in a variety of ways, including monthly zoom meetings, gathering in response to international emergencies, and training activists to achieve their goals in more peaceful ways.

Connecting the Dots

Meeting several from the workshop group felt like meeting soul family – this wasn’t the first lifetime we’d crossed paths.

I’m not sure what my involvement will be in the future, but I’m grateful to have had my “me” labyrinth experience expanded and connected to a much greater “we” movement.

I’m also honoured to have contributed in the ways I was moved to before even having a clue of the bigger picture of what this would turn out to be.

  • the co-creation with Spirit of the painting “Into the Sea of Infinity” (an 8-foot print on display in permanence in the cathedral)
  • an exhibition and Artist Talk during the dedication weekend
  • sharing here with you in case you’re inspired to pursue some of the links included

Other tidbits that delighted me this weekend were:

  • hearing that when the Legacy Labyrinth Project organizers connected the dots of their locations on a map, it formed an infinity symbol, which I’d been intuitively guided to include in my painting
  • The earliest known Christian labyrinth was laid in the floor of the basilica at Al-Asnam in Algeria in 324 AD, way before Chartres in the 1200s
  • I had no idea I was walking #5 in the Legacy Labyrinth Network when I was in Chartres- it was in the backyard of my hotel during my Mary Magdalene Pilgrimage. You can see it at the very end of my video called Co-Creating Sacred Space here on Youtube.
  • although I’d felt the power of both creating and walking a labyrinth as a group while in the Transformative Arts Program in Italy (see my video here), I now understand the importance of it on a much deeper level. My me to we dots are being connected! Yay!

Thank you to all who contributed to creating this sacred labyrinth space in St. John’s, to this weekend of ceremonies and workshops, and to all who are walking in peace and for peace in this world.

Co-Creating From a United Light Meditation

Your Divine Helpers Are With You Always

Where does your mind go upon waking? Your need to pee? Anxiety about the day? Problems from the day before? Excitement at the plans ahead? Gratitude?

One of my teachers,  Abraham Hicks, says that whatever thought you can sustain for 17 seconds has the power to attract more thoughts like it and manifest your reality.

So what you think about first thing in the morning is key to setting the tone for the day. And what you think about throughout the day, for more than 17 seconds, just keeps on creating.

I know that my day unfolds with much greater ease & grace when I remember to call in my Team of Divine Helpers first thing upon waking and ask them to guide and support me for my Highest Good.

Spending focused time with my Team in a guided visioning meditation spreads that intention to every cell of my body and connects me to the intuition I need to take inspired steps in my day.

You’re never alone.

You’ve got a whole Team of Divine Helpers waiting to be invited support you on your journey.

You may know who they are or just sense a loving presence during a meditation. You don’t need to see them or know their names. Simply trust that if you call in those who work for your Highest Good, all those needed on that particular day will show up for you.

One way to do that is through the style of guided visioning meditation I offer.

So go ahead and pee and then come back to enjoy this inner journey to set the tone for the rest of your day.

Co-Creating from a United Light Meditation

Welcome to this week’s gift – a guided visioning meditation inspired by the sacred geometry of the Vesica Pisces that is often featured in my paintings.

It will help you to co-create from the space at the centre where the earthly and celestial realms meet.

You’ll be bathed in 3 lights as you travel from one realm to the other and then to the space in between where they unite.

This meditation was recorded live at Burry Heights Camp during the Body Mind Spirit retreat in June 2024.

The background music is “The Ecstasy of Being” by Christopher Lloyd Clarke.

Click on the video at the top of the page, get comfortable, close your eyes, and enjoy this guided journey into your inner landscapes.

P.S., the Vesica Pisces painting you see in the video was created for an upcoming fundraising auction for a local network of artists. Make sure to stay tuned if you want your chance to win this 11″ x 14″ painting covered in tiny glass beads.

Want More?

If you enjoy this style of guided visioning meditation that helps you connect to and strengthen your intuition, please consider gifting yourself with 1 or more of my 3 meditation collections available for $44 Canadian in my online shop:

  1. Chakra Balance: 9 meditations
  2. Universal Law Collection: 12 meditations
  3. Guided Visioning Journeys for a Happier Healthier Life: 11 meditations

The Ocean Labyrinth Drum

The Ocean Labyrinth Drum was inspired by the same labyrinth as the painting “Into the Sea of Infinity” that I introduced you to in an earlier blog post.

The dedication ceremony for the Ocean Health labyrinth at the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador is happening during the Sunday service at 11am on September 29th. All are welcome!

The labyrinth at both the Cathedral and at the centre of this drum is a 7-circuit version of the 11-circuit Chartres labyrinth.

The Ocean Labyrinth Drum

The Ocean Labyrinth Drum is a hand-painted 16” vegan Remo Buffalo drum, perfect for humid climes like on this island.

I was surprised when intuitively guided to paint a crab as the featured creature for this drum. I knew little about crabs except that they walk sideways.

It’s not surprising, however, that what I found when Googling its symbolism is perfectly matched to the Ocean-Health theme for the labyrinth at the St John’s Anglican Cathedral:

The crab stands as a symbol of resilience, adaptability, and protection. At the core of the crab’s essence is the spirit of persistent determination. With its tenacious grip and the armor-like exoskeleton, the crab embodies the art of self-preservation and the capacity to thrive in shifting environments.”

My hope is that every beat of this drum, just as every dot painted, enhance worldwide prayers and actions for a happy healthy ocean.

May this drum be a blessing for all the creatures who live in the ocean deeps as well as all earthly beings who benefit from it in so many ways.

As the United Nations explains, Ocean Health is something we should all care about because:
  1. The ocean regulates our climate and provides the air we breathe.
  2. The ocean feeds us.
  3. It provides jobs and livelihoods.
  4. The ocean is a tool for economic development.
  5. We need a healthy ocean to survive.

And I’m sure you can come up with your own reasons. For me, living by the ocean, I am nourished by its beauty. With each wave, I see Mother Earth breathing. I feel her heart beating…
