Unlocking the Gifts of Your Shadows

Unlocking the Gifts paintingThis new painting was inspired by a course I’m taking with Derek Rydall – have you heard of him?  Read on for the full story of how you too can unlock the gifts of your shadows using his process.

*

I love so much about the life I’ve designed for myself, but the lack of income in the past year was taking its toll. Hard work wasn’t resulting in increased sales and the “why bother?!” soundtrack was getting louder in my head & heart.

I’d asked my team of Divine Helpers to point me in the right direction. “What’s my next best option to have a more fruitful career as an artist & intuitive?”

Part of living an intuitive life is realizing when you’re off track and need help. For me to continue inspiring others to connect and be true to their Higher Self, I had to admit that I too needed inspiration.

Everything pointed to the need to go deeper within to see what was sabotaging my financial success. I knew better than to blame the local economy or anything outside myself.

When the student is ready, the teacher appears. This time, he showed up in the form of the spiritual visionary and thought leader, Derek Rydall.  I’d never heard of him, but the 4-hour recording my friend sent me started shifting thing in both my inner and outer reality.

That was sign enough that my request for guidance had been answered. So I invested in his Awakened Wealth Mastery 9-week live program -“to create a life of sustainable wealth in every area regardless of the conditions”.

It’s already been fruitful! In week 1 alone, I listened to over 20 hours of audios while painting. Perfect!

This painting, “Unlocking the Gifts” was inspired by Derek Rydall’s Shadow Process, which you too can experience for free on his website.

Derek Rydall – Shadow Process

You’ll grow as a result of Derek’s 30-minute Shadow Dancing Meditation.

It’s all about embracing your shadows and unlocking their gifts.

It asks you to look at the area of your life that you feel most stuck in – that you want to grow the most in. Then you’ll be lead in a process that helps you identify:

  1. your shadow
  2. when it was created
  3. how it helped you grow – its gifts
  4. its message for you now
  5. specific action steps to take to help it feel loved, safe, validated & supported

I was amazed at the results this morning.

One shadow really caught me by surprise. Somewhere along the way, I learned that getting rewarded for my gifts was unspiritual. I had no idea I believed that on any level since on a conscious level I see money as just a part of the energy flow. Very very interesting…

The beauty with this process is that by embracing your shadow, you unlock its gifts (the reason for the spiral in my painting). It’s not about battling it or hating it. It’s all about love!

Funny Story

My Divine Helpers kept playing with me once the Shadow Process was done.

As soon as the audio finished playing in my iTunes, a random song from my music collection started. It was “Sweet Dominique” by Adam Cohen. It’s a rather sexy song with the lyrics “I didn’t know that we could go so many kisses deep, Sweet Dominique”. After going so deep in my shadow process, I felt so acknowledged and loved when hearing this song! The timing made me laugh!

Then, when I went into our class Facebook Group to share this story, I explained that the “Dominique” song I’ve been hearing my whole life when I introduce myself to others is the Singing Nun version about a poor religious brother called Dominique. In the English lyrics, it says:

“Dominique, nique, nique, over the land he plods
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord (x2)”.

So yeah – the message about blessed poverty was deeply ingrained. He was poor, but he was happy and doing God’s work. I’d like to be happy no matter what, and although I choose simple living, I’m not interested in being poor.

What do your shadows have to teach you? What gifts are waiting to be unlocked? Try his meditaiton to find out.

Unlocking the Gifts – the painting

“Unlocking the Gifts”. (12″ x 18″) – SOLD
Acrylic, glass beads & aventurine on gallery-wrapped canvas (no framing required)

1) Seahorse: The seahorse is a symbol of Curiosity, Patience, Protection, Perspective, Persistence, Friendliness, Contentment, High-Perception, Generosity/Sharing.

2) Spiral: symbol of evolution, holistic growth, release & connection with the Divine,

3) Aventurine: While creating the background, I was working with Gabriel, archangel of water, of emotion. I embedded a green aventurine, the “stone of opportunity” that helps harmonize body & mind as it releases toxic emotions. It supports your efforts to reconnect to the wealth that you already are.

P.S. While creating it, I was also reminded of The Work by Byron Katie. Turn It Around: each turnaround is an opportunity to experience the opposite of what you originally believed.

An Oceanic Trio of Paintings

Does the ocean call you? Are you, like me, a water person?

Then you’ll enjoy this oceanic trio of paintings, the results of my first experimentation with a new professional pouring medium that gives added dimension to the watery effects of fluid acrylics.

I thought it’d be easy since I’ve been playing with acrylic washes since the 80s … but if you keep scrolling, I’ll let you in on my humbling creative process.

First though – enjoy the results. These paintings looks great side by side as they’re all 12″ tall.

Which is your favourite?

Aperçu – The Glimpse

(9″ x 12″) – SOLD

SOLD

Is this magical creature being given a glimpse into the very core of Mother Earth – the fires of its origins, of the past? Or has it been shown an opening to a new path illumined by the celestial sun?

There’s an energy of curiosity in Aperçu (the Glimpse). It’s that fear mixed with excitement that comes from moving into the unknown. It’s an invitation to embrace the mystery & grow.

The sea horse is also a symbol of patience, protection, perspective, persistence, friendliness, contentment, high-perception, and generosity.

What other meanings are you feeling here?

9″ x 12″ – $SOLD

Into the Depths

(12″ x 16″) – SOLD

This majestic humpback whale invites you to dive deep into the depths of your Self to rediscover your flow – your magnificent essence. It beckons you into a journey of ease & grace as you say YES! to the self-discovery that connects you to the Oneness of all that is.

The whale is also symbolic of:

  • deeper awareness
  • cosmic consciousness
  • emotional rebirth and understanding
  • nurturing community
  • appreciation for beauty
  • balance

Acrylics on gallery-wrapped Canvas. No framing necessary.

“Into the Depths” -SOLD

Momentum

(12″ x 12″) – SOLD

Jellyfish don’t move by themselves. Their momentum is influenced by a greater presence with which they are at one – the winds of the seas. They’re guided by Mother Nature to survive and thrive.

This jellyfish is a reminder that for you to thrive, you need to live in harmony with Nature, knowing that you don’t have to do anything on your own. You too can connect to Source Energy to be guided to move with ease & grace.

Jellyfish are also a symbol of love, intuition, faith, balance, sensitivity, and flexibility through challenges.

Acrylics on gallery-wrapped Canvas. No framing necessary.

“Momentum” – 12″ x 12″ – SOLD

The Spirit of Exploration

The painting studio is my sanctuary – where I go to connect with Spirit and play.  But it’s also a science lab – where I experiment with new materials and techniques to achieve desired effects.

The trick is to stay in sanctuary mode when the science experiments fail.

You see, I was excited when I found out that my professional acrylic paint companies had developed pouring mediums that would enhance the effects I was already achieving with fluid acrylics.

I expected instant success.

My growth challenge was to remain in a state of inner peace even when hundreds of dollars of supplies seemed to be going to waste.

Plus the sticky messes that covered my studio needed days to dry before I could use the space to try again.

My desire to dive deep into the creative flow was stumped by delays, frustration, and scarcity mentality.

Can you relate to the humbling feelings of becoming a beginner again?

It’s all part of the growing process. You stretch through trial & error. There are no failures – just learning.

Having an open heart and positive mindset are key to the creative process.

The trick is to invite your Higher Self and Spirit in and to keep the ego and fear out of it.

Once I’d accepted that my investment in these expensive art supplies were an investment in play & learning, it all flowed so much easier.

The backgrounds you can see now in this oceanic trio are the 3rd thick layer of  pouring medium mixed with fluid acrylic colours. Each colour has a different density or weight, affecting how they interact when they’re poured together and slowly shift over time. You have some control, but there’s lots of room for surprise.

Once I’d co-created a look that pleased me, the creatures appeared in my mind’s eye – leading to days of that meditative painting and dot-making bliss that nourishes my soul.

Leslie’s Soul Energy Portrait

Leslie's Soul Energy Portrait

The co-creative process behind Leslie’s Soul Energy Portrait was different than my usual client experiences.

Leslie Bridger, also known as the Wizard of Awe, is both a very good friend and a collaborator in events/ workshops.

She’s also been a big supporter of my art since we met, periodically adding to her collection and organizing a fundraiser for my Visionary Art Scholarship Fund before I headed to Vienna to study in 2013/14.

She’d long talked about commissioning a piece when the time was right. That time revealed itself late last fall.

“I had this sense – a vibrational message from the Universe – that you needed to create this painting for me at the end of 2017 to keep me grounded in and connected to all that I am.  I knew it would help me align with the bigger energy of 2018 and encourage me to take the courageous actions I needed to take this year.”

Unlike my usual Soul Energy Portrait Experiences (in which I channel an opening meditation, receive visions, do energy work, and send daily love letters) this one was based on three symbols Leslie received during a Steve Nobel meditation we listened to together at the beginning of a business meeting.

Once we’d finished the meditation, she told me about the infinity symbol, a heart, and a figure with her arms in the air and asked me to create a painting that incorporated all three.

Like with most of my paintings, there are so many layers of paint, symbolism, and energy here.

One day, when I wasn’t even planning to paint, I went to the studio to do my yoga, but it called me so strongly I found myself deep within the process for over 10 hours… and never did my yoga. I couldn’t keep up with the instructions I was intuitively receiving, yet also felt so calm, relaxed, and meditative.

In addition to the symbols that Leslie asked me to work with, I could feel the influence of Steve Nobel’s mediations. He invites the powerful energies of archangels and of the transformative grids of both ascending light from earth and descending light from the heavens.

These energies are present in the initial layers of patterns that can still be seen through the figure as well as the thousands of iridescent dots surrounding it. It’s a reminder that we are not separate from all that is. It is a part of us and we of it.

When Leslie saw it almost completed, she just stood there in silence for the longest time and then said:

“Wow, Wow, Wow!  I’m in awe. I just love the energy!  I feel this incredible Light radiating from this painting that I know is mirroring me as I go onward, upward, forward. I’m ready to shine more than I was willing to in the past. I can see that it’s a reflection of me. And I love that the heart is open – open to giving and receiving.”

I was so glad she liked it. Relieved even. I’d told her “I hope you’re ready to shine”, conscious of the amount of iridescent paint and the mirror I was guided to include.

The white & gold mica at the core of the infinity symbol add to this shine – infusing her path with love & compassion. When the infinity symbol had appeared in one of my visions for Leslie, they were almost as wings. With time, they evolved to include the crimson blood of humanity, the healing energies of Nature and archangel Raphael, and the celebratory feeling of Christmas coursing through it.

The heart in peacock colours is reminiscent of this creature’s ability to transform the toxins / poisons it ingests into beauty. Likewise, Leslie has transformed her near-death experience and challenges into the love and light she famously shares with others.

This is what she just shared with me, a month after bringing her Soul Energy Portrait home:

“I just love this piece. When I’m sitting in front of it and looking at it, I feel everything within my body aligning with all that I am. It’s amplified this divine knowing, this divine energy. It’s aligned my heart, soul, the human me with my divinity. When I’m saying my affirmations or listening to a piece of music I was guided to while contemplating the piece, I feel all of the energy within the cells of my body being activated. And I really feel it when I don’t take the time to do this in the morning. Then, I feel misaligned, incomplete, that there’s something energetically not right. So thank you, thank you. It’s become an important piece of what I need to do every day so that I can become the leader that I know I’m here to be. I love you, my dear friend, my painting and all the magic you create! ” ~ Leslie Bridger – The Awe Project

P.S. I work with clients all over the world to create Soul Energy Portrait Experiences. I only do a few a year as these are very intensive processes. If this is the divine timing for yours, please contact me to make arrangements. Learn more here…

Reborn of Compassion

After a blissful play marathon that brought 14 small paintings to life, I was moved to slow down and go deeper into the energy and vision work that characterizes my art.

It’s from 30 hours of being in this contemplative and co-creative space that “Reborn of Compassion” came into being.

I can’t express how open and expanded my heart felt (and continues to feel) when I gazed upon this finished painting.

The energy I channeled for this piece brought tears of joy to my eyes. So loving….

The Fiery Flow

After applying layers of wet upon wet fluid and high flow professional acrylic paints onto the canvas, I got out of the way.

My job was done. I’d mixed the colours of fire with the movement of water and knew that if I kept trying to force things to happen, it would just mess things up.

Truly, the studio is a great classroom for life.

For over an hour, I literally watched the paint dry while singing Sanskrit yoga chants cross-legged on my colourfully stained drop sheets.

The colours gently flowed and mixed across the canvas, helped by Spirit and the gentle slope in the floor.

It was a very meditative process.

This fiery flow represents the energy, power, passion, and creativity of a new dawn (rebirth & renewal).

The Tree of Life

It took several more hours for that base coat to dry once the colours had stopped running, so I had time to work the design on paper before transferring it onto the canvas.

This painting was sparked by seeing a tall half-circled Celtic-style tree design on a castle wall in the Lord of the Rings movie. I’d gasped in awe when I spotted its simplicity and beauty in the background.

I purposefully didn’t take a picture, so that I wouldn’t be tempted to copy it. But its tall thin dimensions perfectly matched this 18″ x 36″ canvas I had been eyeing in the studio. I’d never painted a really tall tree with a small top before.

Interestingly enough, it wasn’t until the painting was finished that I recognized it as a mandala tree. Fun!

Do you see the iridescent dome shaped designs in the large outer layer of the tree top? I almost filled them in with more designs, but I’m so glad I listened to my intuition and left them empty. They’re two-way portals – for prayers to go out and Divine Love to come in. They offer a violet filter through which to change our paradigms, perceptions – and to see Truth.

The Peacock

The peacock came to me in a vision when I asked my intuition what energy and symbolism also needed to be included.

There was also a pumpkin – perhaps inspired by the fact it was Thanksgiving weekend – but I didn’t include that in the final design.

I love peacocks! I so enjoyed painting one years ago, and its energy was strongly present in a Soul Energy Portrait I painted for a client last year.  I welcomed the opportunity to work with it again. After all, they’re gorgeous and transformative!

Peacocks are thought of as the modern version of the phoenix – itself a powerful symbol of transformation.

But what most impresses me about them is their ability to eat poisonous snakes and plants and transform these toxins into nourishment. What a perfect symbol for transforming one’s challenges into beauty.

This is further enhanced by their many eyes (fanned out along their tail), representing the wise vision necessary to see clearly and live in alignment with Truth.

Add to that its association with Kwan-Yin, goddess of compassion, and what’s not to love?

I had to use a bit of this compassion on myself. My original peacock design had a much stronger S-curve, which is so visually appealing. But once I got into the paint, I kept adding and adding to the fullness of the tail and so I lost some of that original intention. Still, I love it!

When you let go of what you think things should be, it’s easier to accept what is.

The Spiral

I used sacred geometry to strategically place the centre of the Tree of Life and the peacock’s eye in the design. After gazing at the almost-finished painting, however, something about the amount of sky at the top versus the ground at the bottom jarred me.

So I decided to add an element – that’s when the triangle with a spiral appeared in my mind’s eye.

This symbol and string of dots represents being embraced by Source Energy as we do the work of being human – being constantly reborn of compassion … for ourselves and others.

It’s the work of bringing the human back into Spirit.

May gazing at “Reborn into Compassion” raise your vibration to help you make the necessary changes in your life so that you too can live more aligned with your Truth.

Happy New Year Dear One!

“Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities.”
― Gloria Steinem

It’s a new year! It’s bound to be different than last year, but how?

That’s up to you!

Let your imagination take you into the realm of limitless possibilities.

Are you ready to take the leap to explore new interests, new groups, new restaurants, new sports, new destinations? How about new ways of being and doing in your existing relationships, jobs, self-talk, etc.?

What changes would you like to see in these areas of your life?

Or…

How would you like to feel in each of these areas?  Write your answers down.

  1. physical environment;
  2. fun/recreation;
  3. business / career;
  4. personal/spiritual development;
  5. wellness & health;
  6. Romance/Family;
  7. Finances/life planning
  8. Social Life / Community

As we transition into a new year, ask your heart / intuition what it wants. Brainstorm, daydream, or do one of my favourites exercises- an intuitive vision board.

“Take a leap of faith and begin this wondrous new year by believing. Believe in yourself. And believe that there is a loving Source – a Sower of Dreams – just waiting to be asked to help you make your dreams come true.”   ~Sarah Ban Breathnach

Then take the leap – follow through with inspired action. This may be one tiny step at a time or by taking a leap of faith.

The important thing is that you’re moving in the direction of your dreams and desires.

“We must walk consciously only part way toward our goal, and then leap in the dark to our success.”
― Henry David Thoreau

It’s a new year. A blank canvas. Are you ready to take the leap?

As a bonus gift, enjoy this 42-minute creative visualization meditation I channeled a couple of years ago. Allow it to raise your vibration and spark your intuition.

Truth & Transformation – the painting

Truth & Transformation intuitive paintingHave you ever tried the yoga tree pose? It’s the standing version of the seated meditation pose – one that’s achieved through balance and dynamic stillness. It both grounds you and connects you – working from the root to the crown chakra.

Practicing balancing poses in yoga, such as the tree pose, helps you gain both physical and mental steadiness and poise. Without calmness of mind, focus, and concentration, it’s really hard to do. As such, it’s a good barometer of your internal reality. Plus it helps stretch, tone, and strengthen you.  Try it.

I never tire of painting the yoga pose. And when my painting “Happy” found a good home before hanging my work at Embody Yoga and Moksha Yoga St. John’s, I decided to paint another.  And just this weekend, “Truth & Transformation” found a new home too. Blessed be!

Truth & Transformation

Aligning with your Truth means letting go of illusions and delusions to transform into who you have always been at your core.

It’s about shining your Light in your own life to be strong and free while gracing the world with your very being.

That’s what Truth & Transformation is all about.

In its layers, you’ll find

  • the tree of life,
  • the butterfly (symbol of transformation),
  • 8 dragonflies (symbol of change, letting go of illusion & delusions, peace, harmony, prosperity),
  • and a human figure in yoga tree pose (symbol of dynamic stillness & balance).

I invite you to contemplate it visually and energetically to feel what it inspires in you.

The Cat’s Meow – 2 new paintings

painting with two black cats

“Eye to Eye” – (10″ x 10″) – SOLD
There’s nothing quite as wonderful as being with like-minded, like-hearted spirits who naturally nourish our transformational journey through unconditional love. Their friendship offers an honest mirror and support for growth. “Eye to Eye” is a celebration of this kind of friendship!
One friend also saw this as the meeting of the shadow self & the authentic self – or ego & Spirit.

Are you a cat lover? I only truly discovered I was in my adulthood.

Before that, I identified myself as a dog person. By the age of 10, I knew every breed out there.

My friendships actually suffered because I’d leave whatever game we were playing to greet every dog that entered the park.

Alas, the only pet I was allowed to have growing up was a goldfish (but I did hide an occasional toad or lizard under my bed).

Luckily, I befriended a classmate’s dog and took it out to play every day – I don’t remember spending much time with my classmate though.

When I moved out of the family home and began my career, I didn’t feel my long hours away would be fair to a dog.  So I adopted what I thought would be second best – cats.

The Cat Years

You know what happened… I fell in love with cats!

After a few years, however, I decided to work overseas, so I found them a good temporary home with option of adoption (which the new folks took me up on).

When I returned to Canada a second time, I adopted my next cat, Koya, who stayed with me for 13 years and 5 cities before she transitioned from this world.

She taught me so much about love and fear – she was a mirror, a teacher, and yes, my child as I’d decided not not have any of the human variety.

I Still Love Dogs

Now I consider myself a cat and dog person.

When I lived in Kitchener, Ontario, I took an intensive course to become a Professional Dog Trainer and Behaviour Therapist, but it was just to satisfy my desire to spend time with dogs and understand them better.

I was about to go do my Masters of Education in Calgary and thought I’d eventually go back overseas, so it still wasn’t the right time for a dog.

Four-legged Neighbourhood Angels

winged cat

“Winged” – 9″x 12″ -SOLD Winged cats have been featured in art since prehistoric times. In this painting, I was connecting to Egyptian themes and mythological visions as well as to their role as earth angels. What is this painting saying to you?

Here, in Newfoundland, my neighbours have been a blessing. For the first few years, I was welcomed to come by anytime to take their 2 dogs out for a walk while they were at work.

When my canine friends moved, the new cat took over.

He managed to make both houses his home, which suited his humans. While Daddy was at work, kitty would roam the wilderness until he was ready for a nap or a feeding. Then, he’d circle our house to find the right window or door to communicate his desires.

He’d even stay for sleepovers when the neighbours were away.  We all had it good!

Recently, he moved too. That’s OK. Nothing in life is constant but change itself.

In Honour of Our Feline Friends

In the nights before starting work on a series of small canvases, cats visited me in my dreams. So I decided to honour this blessed species through these 2 paintings.

Which speaks to you the most? “Eye to Eye” or “Winged” Why? Feel free to comment below.

That’s Some Weather – New Crop of Paintings

Would you agree that staying in your peace is the best way to be of service? From my experience, it’s only from peace that inspired action or inaction can be born. Getting caught up in the drama doesn’t help.

As Hurricane Irma wreaked havoc in the Caribbean and United States in September, it fed 150 mm (6 inches) of rain into Newfoundland.

The heavy rains and winds outside my studio kept those affected by the hurricane close to my heart and in my realm of attention while I blissfully created a new series of small paintings.

Four of these were definitely inspired by the weather.

1. Misky Morning (9″ x 12″) – SOLD

Acrylics & glass beads on canvas.

“Misky” is a Newfoundland expression meaning a mix of fog and rain.

This island is famous (or infamous) for its weather, and so it’s only natural that a whole slew of regional weather terms exist here.

Along with the colourful houses, the weather is part of what makes this island’s charm! “Misky Morning” celebrates both, as if looking at the scenery through Mother Nature’s veil.

2. Mists of Avalon (9″ x 12″) – NFS

Acrylics on canvas.

Yes, I read Mariam Zimmer Bradley’s great book by that name decades ago, but I also live on the Avalon peninsula of Newfoundland.

When I look out the patio doors, I’m blessed with a view of the Southside Hills of St. John’s, covered in evergreen trees.

I’m so grateful for the beauty that surrounds me, no matter the weather, and celebrate it here with “Mists of Avalon”.

3. Weathering the Storm (9″ x 12″) – SOLD

Acrylics on canvas.

There must be more than 12 layers of paint and texture on this piece. It definitely went through an awkward teenager phase, asking that I love and recognize every step of the intuitive painting process as necessary to creating the final jewel.

“Weathering the Storm” represents our ability to thrive through our challenges and come out with flying colours.

4. Downtown Drizzle (9″ x 12″) – SOLD

Acrylics and glass beads on canvas.

Everyone who sees my paintings live say they’re so much better than online. It’s hard to capture the energy, but also the changing nature of these pieces with a camera.

“Downtown Drizzle”, for example, is covered in a layer of clear glass beads. They refract the light in different ways as you walk by or look at it from different angles.

It’s just like looking at the rain trickling off the trees or rooftops once the sun is shining bright again –  sparkling diamonds that lift the heart with joy. Now imagine that with a background of colourful row houses. That’s downtown St. John’s!

Greeting Cards Variety Pack

P.S. I’ve added many small paintings to my online shop that I’ll introduce in upcoming blog posts. But don’t wait if this is the holiday season you’ll be bringing an original Dominique Hurley painting home for yourself or a loved one. Let’s ship it now! There are over 40 to choose from!

Also consider custom intuitive gifts & greeting cards for your holiday shopping. Thanks for your support.
